"Historical and cultural-political perspectives on two very different transboundary rivers - the Brahmaputra and the Maas - and their water hazards"

gehen.

Abstract:

Transboundary interactions in the Brahmaputra Basin are influenced by historical relations between riparians, current domestic water-energy-food demand, the state's polity, and, lastly, its geopolitical influence in the region and the world. However, at this moment, the riparians (India, China, and Bangladesh) are *intentionally maintaining the status quo for the Brahmaputra River at the transboundary level by using material and ideational resources. The presentation will discuss how India wants to reduce its hegemonic vulnerabilities, China wants to continue its domination in the region, and Bangladesh aims to continue using the Brahmaputra River while simultaneously building its technical and negotiation skills.

Luisa Schmitz
